John comes across as hateful, arrogant, and not very bright. I thought it was appropriate when he choked and turned purple like Joffrey Baratheon. It wouldn't surprise me if his parents had something to do with it--neither the king nor the queen seemed overly fond of him. I think the king calling him a "lazy lout" was the nicest thing said about him during their conversation with Sylvia 😁.
Oh I thought mark’s love for Sylvia was unrequited. Like, she knows and they’ve never said anything to each other? Or have I been reading this too quickly?
Oh, the attraction is mutual, but the social gap between them is too great, so they've both kept quiet about it. They don't want to wreck the friendship, you know? Sylvia, in particular, is very duty-driven, and Mark is very aware of this.

If this was a YA book, he would be creepily interested in Sylvia and probably cop a feel, and this would be portrayed as romantic.
Luckily for her, he didn’t seem interested at all. He’s also her father’s age, so it would’ve been creepy.
Hey man, creepy age-gap romance is a thing! ... it's not my thing, but it's a thing!
